Origin Story

My one-on-one consultations take roots in my teaching at Harvard Business School and the Georgia Institute of Technology. As a tenure-track faculty member, I taught a variety of subjects, including technology & operations management, design thinking, and business strategy. I facilitated large classroom discussions, which encouraged students to think independently, speak with confidence, and listen to each other. I loved the opportunity to learn more about my students as individuals through their diverse and candid viewpoints expressed in the classroom.

The idea of creating a space for one-on-one career consultation first came to me after reading some of my students' course reflections at Georgia Tech. To my surprise, students shared that some of their most impactful learning moments occurred during my office hours, in one-on-one settings. They appreciated my targeted advice, which complemented the more general lessons taught in the classroom. I realized that a focused, supportive, and nurturing environment, with an introspective lens into a person’s professional and personal development, can be highly beneficial—and the needs extend beyond traditional school settings. With the rise of videoconferencing technologies and my transition away from academia, I felt ready to take the leap and create my own platform to do so—thus, Sight-Sphere.com was born.

What Former Students Have Written about My Teaching:

  • "Best professor we had this semester. ... Her ability to process student comments and respond with useful, thoughtful questions that helped guide the student toward a better understanding of the concept was very impressive and helpful in making sure we learned something from each class."

Harvard Business School MBA Student, Teaching Evaluation

  • "I am blown away with how this course has helped me align my life intention with my career intentions. I never realized that it was possible to have these two areas of my life so greatly aligned. I went from dreading graduation to being ecstatic for my career to start in the fall because I know I will be happy now that my intentions for my life have been aligned. I did not realize that misalignment was causing my anxiety about my future. Taking a step back to re-align my life has completely changed my stress and happiness level regarding my future."

Georgia Tech Undergraduate Student, Course Reflection

  • "I appreciate that the professor promoted a lot of conversation between students. I also really appreciate that our professor identifies that being a part time student pulls us in a lot of different direction and I got a lot of out of the class even though I was not overwhelmed with work."

Boston University Part-Time Evening MBA Student, Teaching Evaluation

  • "Professor Shu was absolutely effective in helping my understanding in a course where I had no prior knowledge or experience—from day one, she was able to distill complex concepts into simple, easy-to-understand processes."

Harvard Business School MBA Student, Teaching Evaluation

  • "This class reminded me that I must be open minded to the opportunities that arise and that my intention for why I am doing the things that I am doing should be at the forefront of my mind. Because once you start doing things to chase the next promotion or pay increase, intention becomes clouded and leaves you vulnerable to forget the things that truly matter. I am so grateful for this lesson at the end of my college career, and it is something that will stick with me as I move into the professional world."

Georgia Tech Undergraduate Student, Course Reflection

  • "Professor Shu obviously really cares about us all as people, and it shows; Professor Shu doesn't just teach us the concepts in a dry way, she makes us deeply consider the broader implications of [technology and operations management] concepts. She just has a lot of passion and it's freaking contagious!"

Harvard Business School MBA Student, Teaching Evaluation

  • "Pian Shu has been the single most influential person in my HBS experience. She sparked my interest in operations and general management. She also coached me and gave me advice and confidence to speak up more in class. I have not had such an inspirational teacher since high school."

Harvard Business School MBA Student, Teaching Evaluation

  • "I realized what you said at the start of the class, that business and life are intertwined. … I could learn about theory for years (and some theory is helpful), but practice requires a very different perspective than what I had developed over the last four years at Tech. I’m really proud of the progress we made in this class (and I say 'we' because I showed up, but I was greatly influenced by my classmates and by you, of course). This class has been one of the best things that could have ever happened to me, especially right at the end of my time at GT."

  • "Professor Shu is the standard to which I'll hold all future professors."

My Approach to Consultation

  1. I listen from a place of empathy, not rushing to find solutions, but rather focusing first on fully understanding your points of view.

  2. I believe that each individual possesses unique inner wisdom that guides their growth and transformation. As a consultant and coach, my priority is to assist you in bringing awareness to this inner clarity.

  3. In our conversations, I strive to maintain a good balance between allowing space for exploration and providing targeted advice. I like to challenge conventional wisdom and find it refreshing to incorporate diverse perspectives: rational, irrational, intellectual, intuitive, concrete, and metaphysical. Thus, each session is uniquely different—when it comes to the journey of professional growth, I firmly believe that there is no one-size-fits-all path.

Choosing a path does not have to be an arduous task. When the stakes seem high, logical minds can become entangled in analyzing the pros and cons, overlooking a clear voice that whispers underneath: “Yes! I’d love to…” or “No! I’d rather…”

Finding clarity means trusting that this voice would not lead you astray.
